We took flight from threat of Trumpism
The Gazette
|May 20, 2025
A US citizen aghast at the tone of Donald Trump’s second presidency says he fled the country to protect his daughter - and is now setting up home on Teesside.
Daniel Geduld, fearing “divisive rhetoric” would lead to a mass exodus, boarded a plane to the UK on January 20, the day Trump was inaugurated. The 47-year-old, who lived in Indiana, was worried his 14-year-old daughter Vi, who he says is gay and autistic, would be subjected to intolerance.
He said: “When Trump got elected we thought it was too risky for her to stay there, and the more I see in the news the more risky it seems. We were in Indiana, which is a very red area, very conservative, there was no question Trump would be elected there and the Governor is just as bad if not worse.
“It is very worrying. There is a lot of fear, especially economic fear, but a lot of fear about schools for people like Vi because they are under the Department of Education.
“My daughter and I have trans friends and we have no idea what is going to happen with them. We do not know how they are going to get out. It is terrifying.”
