Inspirational Paula is a 'gatekeeper to nursing'

A “TRULY inspiring” Teesside nurse described as a “gatekeeper to the nursing profession” in her 17-year work with student nurses has been decorated with a national award.

Paula Wilkinson, from Middlesbrough’s James Cook University Hospital supervises students ‘in practice’ while completing their training.

The nurse, who works in the cardiac intensive care unit, was named Practice Supervisor of the Year at the Student Nursing Times Awards.

With several nominations received from across the country, Paula stood out with a unanimous judges’ vote for her enthusiasm and compassion.

The gong is in recognition of a supervisor who demonstrates empathy with students, adapting-coaching methods to suit individuals and encouraging questions, informed debate and learning.

Paula supports and supervises students to achieve specific competencies needed to complete their training, as part of Nursing and Midwifery Council requirements.

The judges applauded Paula for her infectious enthusiasm and unwavering dedication to enhancing the student experience.

She was called a truly inspiring role model and leader for bringing authenticity, humility and strength.
