Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH): A common concern for aging men
The Free Press Journal - Mumbai
|October 09, 2025
Encouraging men to prioritize their health with regular checkups and screenings, especially for often-overlooked prostate issues, is essential. Recently, King Charles's prostate surgery has raised awareness of this common condition. Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), or enlarged prostate, is a prevalent concern for aging men. This small gland located below the bladder can compress the urethra when enlarged, causing various urinary symptoms.
What are the symptoms?
Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) or enlarged prostate is a common, noncancerous condition affecting over half of men in their 60s, and the majority by age 80. Symptoms vary but can include weak or interrupted urine flow, difficulty starting urination, frequent urination (especially at night), incomplete bladder emptying, urgency, and leakage. Despite these disruptive symptoms, only 5% of men seek treatment, highlighting the need for increased awareness and open discussion. Early intervention can significantly improve quality of life.
How to prevent it?
