Region on the cusp of change in 1960

We step back to 1960 - a year which saw Britain, the world and our region on the cusp of change, just 15 years after the end of World War II.

In Newcastle's west end, stand the steeply descending terraced houses of Clara Street, with the towering chimneys of Dunston Power Station on the other side of the River Tyne.

Demolition work on the Victorian-era street would begin around 1970, while the power station would cease operations in the mid 1980s.

Across the river in South Shields, meanwhile, striking seamen were gathered at Mill Dam, before they marched through the town.

And at St James’ Park, Newcastle United were in action against league champions Burnley, at the start of the 1960-61 season, one in which the Magpies would be relegated at the end of the campaign, joining Tyne and Wear rivals Sunderland in football's second division.
