Well in the last few weeks I have been shocked by the number of senior people I respect in both the SNP and Scottish Labour Party who feel like that about their own parties less than a year away from the Holyrood elections.

The Nats are in a doom loop. First they are cash-strapped. They're losing members in the tens of thousands and those they have don't seem motivated to get out to campaign.

Their record in government keeps getting worse. Cancer waiting times, for example, the worst ever revealed this week. The economy is congealed at best. Education standards continue to slump. And that's before you get to things like the ferry fiasco.

Everyone at school remembers a teacher - usually a maths teacher - of whom it was said they were "too clever to teach". This, of course, was just a myth. They were just bad teachers.
