• 200g plain flour • 240g caster sugar, sifted • 1 1/4 tsp bicarbonate of soda • 1/4 tsp cream of tartar • 45g cocoa powder • 140g soft butter (with a little extra for greasing) • 200ml milk • 2 eggs

For the chocolate icing

• 120g soft butter • 340g icing sugar, sifted • 45g cocoa powder, sifted

• 4 drops of vanilla essence • A few drops of milk
