Charity left 'devastated' as centre closes

AN organisation that supports children with additional needs in Stockport has shared its devastation at the closure of the building it has used for the last nine years.
Autisk announced the ‘enormous shock’ on social media this week as it was told of the closure of Adswood Young People’s Centre on Neston Grove, which is owned by the council and rented out.
Itis understood that roof failure was the issue which led to the decision to close the building.
‘This happened sooner than expected despite the council’s regular monitoring and maintenance of the building and recent works being planned.
‘The council is now reviewing contractor quotes to decide the next steps.
While Autisk itself is not closing, the organisation now has nowhere to run its sessions as it helps families with short breaks, offering social groups, workshops, advice and signposting.
‘A joint statement from Autisk and Stockport council stated that a ‘serious issue’ was found with the building which meant it was not safe to use.
News of the building closing sparked an outpouring of support on social media, with Autisk saying it had received hundreds of messages from the community.
Jan Bennett, founder and CEO at Autisk, said: “My heart is broken, I put everything into that building for over eight years to create a safe haven for families.
