Refurbishment is due to take place at Allan's Primary School

- KAIYA MARJORIBANKS

The number of classrooms at a city centre school are to be reduced to accommodate refurbishment work.

Allan’s Primary School currently has capacity to operate as a nine classroom school, with the potential to accommodate a maximum of 267 pupils.

But council education officials say the reduction in the number of classrooms to seven then six shouldn’t make any difference to families living in its catchment area as almost half of pupils at the school attend as a result of placing requests.

In a report to the council’s children and young people committee, officers said: “Schools, Learning and Education’s optimum operating capacity of a primary school is 87 per cent of its build capacity, therefore meaning Allan's Primary School's optimum operating capacity is currently 232.

“Formally reducing Allan’s Primary School to a seven classroom school will be the first step in the school roll management plan required to support the refurbishment works.

“This would lead to a new build capacity of Allan’s Primary School being 217 with an optimum capacity of 189.

“The pupil projections for Allan’s PS supports reducing the number of classrooms as the roll.
