IDS calls for pension triple lock to be axed

FORMER pensions secretary Sir Iain Duncan Smith has called for the triple lock to be scrapped and urged Kemi Badenoch to abandon the party’s commitment to it.

Senior Conservative Sir Iain said it was time to “move away” from the promise, which guarantees a decent annual rise in the state pension. He argued the policy takes cash away from working people.

But the suggestion will spark fury among campaigners who say the triple lock is vital to prevent more of the nation’s older people falling into poverty.

Nearly one million people aged over 66 are living in deprivation, according to government statistics the highest number since comparable records began.
