Meteorologists have warned the rain, combined with heavy winds, will cause localised flooding in places.

They have also warned of travel disruption, describing driving conditions as “particularly poor”.

Met Office deputy chief meteorologist Tom Crabtree said: “Storm Amy... will bring gale force winds across northern and western regions, with gusts reaching 50 to 60 miles per hour inland in northern Britain, and potentially reaching 70 to 80 miles per hour in places.
