The £100 million housing regeneration scheme is changing the face of Paisley as a significant number of homes are demolished.

- EDEL KENEALY

The Renfrewshire Council plan - which seeks to refurbish and rebuild whole communities - has commenced the demolition of homes in Springbank Road while Well Street is almost unrecognisable.

Tenements, which have lined the West End street for more than 100 years, are being raised to the ground.

Properties at 4, 15, 17, 24 and 28 Well Street and 1 Clavering Street East are in the process of being taken down, It follows the demolition of the other half of the street earlier this year.

The buildings are being demolished as part of the West End Regeneration Masterplan and will make way for a host of new private and socially-rented homes.

Councillor Kenny MacLaren, who represents the Well Street area, said the demolition marked the end of an era for Well Street but said it has a bright future in the years to come.

Explaining he was delighted to mark this milestone in the process, he told the Express: "It is sad to see these final buildings being pulled down but, in later years, there was very little demand for them and they are now long past their best.
