Severn Trent plays down possibility of hosepipe ban

AFTER the driest spring in 132 years, two droughts have been declared in parts of the country and several water companies are warning households to use less water.

The Midlands last had a hosepipe ban 30 years ago, during the blisteringly hot summer of 1995.

While Severn Trent has declared it has no plans for a ban, despite the balmy temperatures we are likely to see this summer, other water providers have said they could introduce measures.

A hosepipe ban, officially known as a temporary use ban, would outlaw any hosepipe use during a drought period. In extreme cases, this may be enforced by a warning, a fine, or even prosecution.

The Environment Agency has outlined what activities associated with hosepipes would be outlawed under the legislation.
