Constable is given final warning over bar brawl

AN OFF-DUTY police officer who “aggressively” attacked someone during a brawl in a bar and then misled his colleagues to downplay the incident has kept his job.

PC David Barton was pushed over a set of chairs in the Gilt bar, in Bingham, after a row broke out at about 10pm on August 18, 2023.

The officer responded by pushing aside two members of the public who were trying to split up the pair and attacking the man who had shoved him.

During the commotion another bar customer was headbutted, but PC Barton said he was acting in self-defence against a group of attackers and denied headbutting the person in question.

While a bouncer said the police officer was drunk, PC Barton said he was not, despite having drunk “five or six pints” with his wife at the bar.
