Asian hornet sighting sparks nationwide alert

A NATIONAL alert has been issued after the discovery of an Asian hornet in Cork - sparking fears that a population may have established itself on the south coast of Ireland.

The National Parks and Wildlife Service yesterday confirmed the recent sighting and capture of the large stinging insects.

A precise location in Cork has not been given but it has resulted is a rare nationwide biosecurity alert.
