Widow blasts Tory move to ban legal aid for assisted dying

PEERS have been blasted for trying to turn the assisted dying bill into a law for only the rich by banning legal aid for it.

Former Tory minister Therese Coffey, now a baroness, has tabled an amendment in the House of Lords to prevent legal aid being used by those seeking an assisted death via the High Court.

She said yesterday: "I think there will be plenty of other ways, charities, I'm sure, will evolve that can provide financial support if needed.

"I don't believe this should be done by taxpayers."

Campaigner Louise Shackleton, who went to Dignitas in Switzerland with her husband Antony, who had motor neurone disease, was furious.
