Govt sounds alarm over rate of premature births

The Public Health Ministry has voiced renewed concern over Thailand's high rate of premature births, which currently stands at 9.91%, a figure considered high compared with global averages.
Marking World Prematurity Day yesterday, Public Health Minister Pattana Promphat said the ministry and its network partners have been working together to strengthen monitoring systems and introduce measures to prevent and treat preterm births. The goal is to reduce the national rate to below 8% through early detection, better maternal care, and increased public awareness.
According to the ministry, late antenatal care remains a major contributor to premature births, alongside insufficient risk screening in early pregnancy.
