Flood defences ramped up as storm nears

Bangkok is strengthening its flood defences as the capital braces for rising water levels in the Chao Phraya River, influenced by Typhoon Kalmaegi and increased runoff from the North.

The city has begun draining canals and water retention areas to prevent overflow and will maintain heightened vigilance through next week, says Bangkok governor Chadchart Sittipunt.
Mr Chadchart said cooler winds have reduced rainfall in the capital, easing immediate flood risks. However, he ordered districts to reinforce sandbag barriers, especially in vulnerable areas outside floodwalls such as the Rong Si and Wat Thewarat communities,
