This issue our gardening expert Conrad McCormick focuses on climbing plants.
-
When it comes to transforming our gardens into green havens, few elements rival the allure of climbing plants. We often think about perennials, shrubs and trees but can forget about clothing vertical surfaces. With their ability to weave a tapestry of colour and texture, whether with lush green or variegated foliage or vibrant exotic blooms, climbing plants have the power to transform any space into a sanctuary as they soften hard surfaces, disguise unsightly features, as well as provide a protective haven and habitat for birds and other wildlife.
SUN WORSHIPERS
JASMINE – Jasminum officinale:
Let’s begin our ascent with the delicate and fragrant Jasmine. This charming climber entices with its captivating scent as it adorns outdoor spaces with clusters of star-shaped white flowers. It can be grown to scramble up walls and trellises, the scent from its summer blooms drifting on the breeze on warm evenings, bringing a touch of romance to any garden. Usually pure white, also look out for the cultivar ‘Clotted Cream’ with pale creamy-yellow blooms. Full sun. Height 3m
