The heel bone (calcaneus) and the Achilles tendon are critical components of the foot and ankle, playing vital roles in movement and stability. Symptoms and Treatments
Common Injuries - Achilles Tendonitis
Symptoms:
• Pain and stiffness along the Achilles tendon, particularly in the morning
• Swelling and thickening of the tendon
• Tenderness when touched
• Pain that worsens with activity
Treatments:
• Rest and activity modification
• Ice application to reduce swelling
• Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
• Physical therapy, including stretching and strengthening exercises
• Orthotics or heel lifts to reduce tendon strain
• In severe cases, surgical intervention may be required
Achilles Tendon Rupture
Symptoms:
• Sudden, sharp pain in the back of the ankle
• A popping or snapping sound at the time of injury
• Difficulty walking, especially pushing off the foot
• Visible gap or indentation in the tendon
Treatments:
• Immediate immobilization and referral to a specialist
• Non-surgical treatment with a cast or functional brace
• Surgical repair to reattach the torn ends of the tendon
