Ten-year-old Nitesh loved his parrot, Popo, very much.

A Promise of Friendship

Popo was the darling of the household. His cage hung in the courtyard, and every guest greeted him first. Popo, in turn, welcomed everyone with great enthusiasm. Nitesh's mother, Rohini, had taught him a few words, and whenever a guest arrived, Popo would immediately say, “Hello!”— winning everyone's heart.

Nitesh and Popo shared a deep friendship. Every day after school, Nitesh would sit by him, talking and playing for hours. But lately, he had noticed that Popo wasn't as cheerful as before. He spoke less and often bit the bars of his cage with his beak. This troubled Nitesh deeply. He couldn't understand why Popo seemed so sad and restless.

Popo had been watching the free birds pecking at the grains scattered in the courtyard. He, too, had begun to dream of leaving the cage and flying under the open sky.

One Sunday, Nitesh decided to spend the entire day with Popo. Sitting near the cage, he asked, “What's the matter, Popo? Why aren't you happy?”

Popo looked at him for a long moment, then tried to push his head through the bars. Nitesh felt as if he wanted to get out. He didn't even feel like playing as he usually did. The next day at school, Nitesh shared his worry with his best friend, Lalit.

“It seems Popo doesn't want to stay home anymore,” Lalit said.

“So where will he go?” Nitesh asked.

“Once freed from the cage, he’ll live anywhere. Most likely on trees, like other birds.”

“But there are so many dangers out there. And if he leaves me, I won’t be able to live without him.”

image“Think about it! Do you want Popo happy or sad?” Lalit asked gently.

“He is my friend. I can’t bear to see him sad. What should I do, Lalit?”

“Just set him free!”

The Park Came Alive

The Koi fish living in Sangam Pond of Munia Park had lately become very sad. No one came near their pond anymore, while earlier, the place used to be full of morning walkers. In the evenings, women and children would gather there. The park always remained lively with people’s chatter and laughter.

GRAVE MISTAKES

“Here’s your new school,” Dad said as he pulled over at the gate of Silver Pines School. Courtesy of his dad’s frequent job transfers, Omi is always the new student. This was his fourth school in the last eight years. Standing at the gates of his new school, clutching his bag, he tried not to look nervous. His family had just moved to the town a week ago, and everything still smelled new—new books, new uniform, new trouble.
