Advances in rubber additives are enabling tyre manufacturers to balance durability, efficiency and sustainability as mobility technologies evolve, writes Upendra Kasbekar
Tyres remain one of the most critical components in the automotive ecosystem, directly influencing vehicle safety, efficiency and performance. As electrification reshapes vehicle architectures and sustainability regulations tighten globally, tyre manufacturers are facing new material challenges. Higher torque loads from electric drivetrains, increased vehicle weight due to battery packs and the need to improve rolling resistance for energy efficiency are pushing the boundaries of rubber compound engineering.
At the heart of these developments lies advanced rubber chemistry. Modern tyres are complex composite structures made from natural and synthetic rubber, reinforcing fillers such as carbon black or silica, and a range of chemical additives that determine how rubber compounds behave during manufacturing and throughout their service life.
These additives ranging from antioxidants and curing agents to processing aids play a decisive role in determining tyre durability, performance and manufacturing efficiency.
The Chemistry Behind tyre Performance
Rubber additives influence several critical properties of a tyre, including heat resistance, mechanical strength, abrasion resistance and durability. During tyre manufacturing, curing agents and accelerators control the vulcanisation reaction that transforms raw rubber into a durable elastic material.
Antioxidants are particularly important because rubber compounds are highly susceptible to degradation caused by oxygen, ozone and heat. Without stabilisation, oxidative reactions can lead to cracking, brittleness and reduced tyre life. By protecting the rubber matrix, antioxidants significantly improve durability under real-world operating conditions.
