Usually, Prince Charles dreads August 31 – the date of Princess Diana’s tragic passing – rolling around each year, given the inevitable conspiracies about whether he was involved in his ex-wife’s death. But if the 72-year-old thought these suspicions would fade as he moved closer to becoming king, he was sorely mistaken.

Charles was forced into hiding last week as serious allegations Diana made against him, in writing, made an ugly resurgence in the same week as the former couple’s sons unveiled a statue in her honour at Kensington Palace on July 1.

It would have been the late princess’ 60th birthday, had she not died in a mysterious car crash in a Paris tunnel almost 24 years ago.

While the history books say Diana died aged 36 alongside her lover Dodi Fayed due to her driver being drunk and motorcycle-riding photographers being in her pursuit, Charles has never quite been able to shake off rumours that he was somehow involved in her passing.
