The Handmaid’s Tale has never been scared of depicting shocking scenes of torture and rape, as the enslaved women of Gilead are subjected to all manner of cruelties at the hands of the religious extremists who hold power.

This week, there are more harrowing scenes in the C4 drama when the government organises an elaborate mass wedding, with a group of guardians married off to a selection of teenage girls who they have never met before.

‘We’ve taken it from the original book, which includes a scene where a bunch of children are married to guardians,’ explains showrunner Bruce Miller. ‘These girls are married off without being able to give their consent. It’s a horrible dynamic.’
