|December 2019
If you’ve been following the VW scene since ’87-ish and/or recall issue 1 of VolksWorld, this car will need no introduction. However, for the benefit of those that may not recognise this particular rad ride, allow us to introduce Europe’s (first) most beautiful VW….
As a teenager I simply couldn’t get enough VW input, especially the pastel painted, ‘new wave’ kind I’d seen on the pages of Custom Car (courtesy of a certain Mr Seume). VW Trends and Hot VWs mags had the USA scene covered and I was always stoked to find out what was happening Stateside. However, you have to remember that back in the mid-to-late ’80s there was no internet so the only way this VW-mad schoolboy could keep track of the fast-developing UK VW scene was via a few captions or show pics on the pages of CC or Street Machine. Of course, I was desperate to check out the new Run to the Sun event, and word of a new show organised by Brett Hawksbee had filtered through by the spring of ’87 – that’s right, the first Bug Jam gathering at Santa Pod Raceway. And then, it happened – Keith Seume launched a new Link House title by the name of VolksWorld and the timing was, quite simply, perfect. Like so many other fans ‘of a certain age’, that £1.50 magazine changed my life. I wouldn’t like to estimate just how many times I read every word in the launch issue of VolksWorld but I can tell you that the pages literally fell apart in the end (and yes, I later purchased a pristine copy…)

NICE ONE, SHERLOCK!
It’s fun investigating a car’s past – especially if the vehicle in question dates from the early fifties. That said, the Norwegian owner of this ’52 Beetle discovered more than he bargained for when he donned his deer-stalker

The Army era
It may have escaped your notice, but it was recently the 70th anniversary of Britain giving Volkswagen back to West Germany. The years of 1945 to 1949, when the British military ran Wolfsburg, were more crucial than many enthusiasts appreciate

PUTTIN' ON THE SHOW
When it comes down to rating the most desirable air-cooled VWs, I think it’s fair to say that a ’50s Karmann Cabriolet is gonna’ be pretty close to the top of the list. Now add some accessories, Fuchs and a decent stance and you’re talking about the stuff dreams are made of…
