Julia Montes sits next to an early work by Whee Delgado, whose mother-in-law Helen Ho is the daughter of legendary artist, Anita-Magsaysay-Ho. Delgado’s work has since become more abstracted. Following a sold-out showing at The Columns Gallery at Gillman Barracks in Singapore, her mother in-law was kind enough to help us find a work by Delgado for our cover which was the perfect balance to an otherwise very monochramatic setting.
Montes offers a compelling counterpoint to the culture of excess that still pervades much of residential design. Her home is defined by an almost philosophical restraint. One is reminded of Martin Heidegger and his notion of “dwelling” as a mode of being rather than mere habitation. Montes’ interior is conceived not as a tableau for presentation, but as a setting for daily life. It is composed with discipline, clarity and a strong sense of equilibrium.
To return, perhaps, to Pierre Bourdieu, one might argue that true cultural capital reveals itself not in overt accumulation but in discernment, the ability to exercise restraint. Montes’ home embodies this principle with clarity: it is an “essentials-only” environment, yet one in which every element carries intention and weight.
