Actor Robson Green on turning 60 and his career

- VICKI POWER

'Grantchester is one of the nicest jobs I've ever done'

When Robson Green turned 60 just before Christmas, he didn't celebrate with a party or even a glass of champagne.

'I've never celebrated a birthday,' explains the Grantchester star. 'I've had some lovely birthday presents but it's just another day, isn't it? And I have loved every age I've ever been. Every day should be special. Every day should be like it's your birthday!

He recognises that 60 is a milestone. 'When I was young, I looked at someone who was 60 years old and thought to myself, "How are you still alive?!" he says with a chuckle. 'Funnily enough, I had a medical recently for a job I did and the guy referred to me as elderly! I was devastated. That's what people do when you're 60. I don't want their awe, their pity or the label of being older.'

Robson didn't even drown his sorrows with a drink. 'I don't drink, really,' he says. 'I stopped about 15 years ago. I needed clarity in the morning and after just a few wines or champagne, which I had a penchant for, I'd get a fuzzy head. Now I have sparkling water and clarity and it's great.' Besides, Robson was working hard on his birthday, filming a new drama in Spain with W1A and The Crown star Jason Watkins.
