Would June's holiday destination have all the comforts of home?
Megan was standing by her mother’s front door, but June herself was nowhere to be seen.
‘Come on, Mum. We want to beat the traffic.’
‘I'm just rearranging things!’ June shouted back. ‘It’s got to look as if I haven’t hidden anything.’
Megan and her husband Graeme exchanged confused glances. Moments later, June appeared in the hall with a pile of items wobbling precariously in her hands.
Megan looked questioningly at her. ‘Where are you taking all those?’
‘I'm going to put them out of sight,’ June said, disappearing into the cupboard under the stairs. ‘I don’t want anyone to find them.’
‘But what exactly would they do with old videos and CDs?’
‘And in the unlikely event anyone did steal them, Graeme added, ‘we would get in touch with the letting agency and they would report the theft to the police.’
June emerged from the cupboard and joined them in the hallway.
‘All this is new to me. When your dad was alive, we would never have let total strangers book our house for a holiday.’
It had been Megan's idea that her mum should rent out her home for a week while they took her on a muchneeded break.
