My daughter is having a baby this summer.

I'm worried I'll be called on for childcare for my daughter's new baby'

I am thrilled on one hand, but also worried I will be called on to offer childcare. I'm due to retire and could afford to do so sooner, but I had really hoped to do a bit of travelling and enjoy the freedom of not working. Am I being selfish and letting my daughter down?

AI was browsing the brilliant The School of Life (theschooloflife.com) when I stumbled across a feature about how best to 'plan' our lives. If you think about it, most of us are conditioned from a relatively early age to plot out how our lives should look. We mark all the major milestones and then do our level best to follow that as closely as possible. Why? Because that's what most people do, and we measure ourselves by other people's expectations. Planning is vital to our wellbeing in one sense: an idea of purpose and direction gives our days structure and meaning. But if our life starts to deviate from that expectation, it can leave us with a sense of confusion that makes us question who we really are and what we really want.
