A few days ago I was at a work do with my husband. As the drinks flowed and people nursed glasses of prosecco or beer, I clutched my glass of lemonade and braced myself. And, sure enough, as time went on, as usual everyone asked me the question I am always asked at any social gathering: 'Why on earth are you not drinking?'

I stopped drinking in 2019 after a lifetime of binge-drinking. It was the best decision I ever made and I have felt healthier and happier ever since. Far from being difficult, as I worried it might have been, I stopped suddenly. Cold turkey. I have never looked back. I'm slimmer, more clear headed and richer for it. But there is a downside.
