This tiny cluster of nine islands, resplendent in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, may just be one of Portugal's best-kept secrets. Thanks to its volcanic origins, these islands are home to steaming, mineral-rich waters that flow naturally from below the earth. One of the most astonishing natural treasures on São Miguel - the largest island - is Caldeira Velha.
