Too big to HAVE SEX

In January 2003, I'd just been on a date with a man I'd met at a speed-dating event. It had been a wonderful night full of conversation, and I had high hopes of a second date, maybe even a third. Only he sent me a message the next day explaining that he didn't want to see me again, and the reason? My weight. 'I'm sorry, you're lovely,' his message had said. 'It's just... your size.' You might have expected me to be shocked or indignant, but at a size 22, I knew I was big and part of me couldn't blame him. I had no confidence and didn't feel very sexy, so how could I expect anyone else to find me irresistible?

I'd always been on the bigger side and after I had my son, Nathan, in 2000 my weight had just crept up more.

I'd split with his dad when he was a year old, and my focus had been on being a good mum.

I cooked Nathan healthy meals, but not wanting to waste food, I ate his leftovers. Then, exhausted after a long day, I'd order myself a takeaway once he was in bed, usually pizza or a Chinese meal.

Finding love

Those nights on my own when Nathan was asleep, I just felt so alone - and food became a comfort.

During the day, I'd hide my increasing weight under baggy tracksuits. Yet, despite how much bigger I was getting, I was still determined to find love.

So, in March 2007, I signed up to the dating site Plenty of Fish and decided to only match with bigger men, believing they'd be more accepting of me.

And in October 2007, a nice-looking man messaged me. His name was Shaun and he asked to take me out.

In my local pub later that week, I felt an instant connection. Shaun was smart and funny and it was clear we were sexually attracted to each other as we held each other's intense eye contact.
