A photographer sojourns to surf camp in El Salvador, catching waves and capturing the beauty of this laid-back stretch of the Pacific coast

Surf’s Up

Karyn Millet is no stranger to surf culture. The photographer, who is based in Los Angeles, says the lifestyle is knit into the very fabric of Southern California. So, when her husband suggested they take a “vacation” to surf camp in El Salvador, she saw it as a chance to make good on her hometown vibe—improving what she admits are her somewhat rudimentary skills—and spend time in Central America, one of her favorite places to explore. Millet and her husband leaned all the way in, booking a two-week Surf Camp at Puro Surf Hotel + Performance Academy in El Zonte, a lush little beach town on the country’s Pacific coast that’s considered a surf mecca.

DRUNKEN SAILOR

Few summer pleasures rival a round of boat drinks. They’re easy to make: Relying on a handful of easy-to-stow ingredients, a true boat drink comes together without fussy precision or technique. And they’re fun to drink: Glassware on boats has to be nonbreakable, which means using sturdy tumblers (best decked out in cheeky nautical motifs). Given that ease and enjoyment, there’s nothing more tempting than another round—which is perhaps why this cocktail has the name it does.
