|August 2025
India is taking massive strides in the world of ADAS, autonomous vehicles (AVs), and telematics. With homegrown innovations tailored to local road conditions, India is making its mark on the global automotive landscape, from regulatory changes to Al-powered R&D. This article explores how India is leading the charge in vehicle safety, automation, and connectivity, creating a roadmap for the future
The future of driving in India is shifting gears. The country, known for its bustling streets and chaotic traffic, is witnessing a revolution in automotive technologies, particularly in Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and autonomous vehicle (AV) innovations. What started as a trend in high-end global vehicles is now becoming a reality on Indian roads, with major OEMs, homegrown startups, and academic institutions making rapid strides to localize technologies for Indian conditions.
From enhancing road safety through ADAS to testing futuristic AV systems, India is positioning itself as a key player in the global race for autonomous driving. Let’s dive into how India is advancing these technologies from Level 1 to Level 5.
ADAS in India: Current Trends and Local Innovations
India’s automotive sector is undergoing a transformative phase with the adoption of ADAS technologies. Unlike the West, where fully autonomous vehicles (Level 4/5) are dominating discussions, India’s focus remains on the early stages, Level 1 and Level 2, where safety and convenience take center stage.
Regulatory Push for Safety
The Indian government is making significant moves to bolster road safety. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has mandated the inclusion of critical ADAS features such as Advanced Emergency Braking (AEB), Driver Drowsiness and Attention Warning (DDAW), and Lane Departure Warning (LDW) in all vehicles with more than eight passengers starting from April 2026. This is a crucial step in reducing road fatalities and moving towards safer mobility.
