From aspiration to acceleration India's next-gen mobility transformation
PCQuest
|August 2025
India's mobility ecosystem is undergoing a fundamental reset from fuel-based to electric, from mechanical to digital, and from ownership-driven to experience-led. This transformation is not only accelerating innovation but redefining India's position in the global mobility landscape
India's automotive industry is entering a dynamic phase of growth and innovation, fueled by strong domestic demand, policy support, and rapid advances in electric and connected vehicle technologies. As per insights from CyberMedia Research (CMR), India has emerged as one of the world's leading automotive production and export hubs with 26.1 million vehicles shipped in FY2025, including passenger vehicles (PV), two-wheelers (2W), three-wheelers (3W), and commercial vehicles (CV) and 5.4 million units exported. However, beyond the impressive numbers, the industry is undergoing a deeper transformation, one that is reshaping the very fabric of transportation.
This transformation is rooted in a shift toward a cleaner, smarter, and more inclusive future of mobility. Electric propulsion, Al-driven connectivity, smart infrastructure, and renewable energy integration are converging to create an ecosystem that is not only technologically sophisticated but also uniquely suited to India's scale and needs. The transition is being driven not by any single innovation, but by a collaborative ecosystem spanning startups, OEMs, policymakers, and global technology players.
The EV wave: From niche to nationwide
Electric vehicles (EVs) have emerged as a central pillar of this evolution. Once a niche category, EVs are now gaining mass-market traction across urban and rural India. Supported by the FAME-II scheme, state-level subsidies, and rising environmental awareness, adoption has accelerated rapidly, especially in cost-sensitive segments like 2W and 3W. Automakers have localized product development to suit India's diverse road and usage conditions.
