A new study published in Science uncovers how certain bacteria resort to a brutal, almost gladiatorial tactic when they're starving: they hunt their neighbors with a high-tech biological weapon called the Type VI Secretion System (T6SS). This nanoscopic harpoon mechanism allows bacteria to skewer nearby microbes, siphoning off their innards to stay alive.
