WREXHAM could end up paying £1.3million in wages to a former England star who has been left out of their Championship squad.

Jay Rodriguez signed for the Red Dragons from Burnley on an 18-month deal in January, scoring twice in 17 appearances as Phil Parkinson's squad secured promotion from League One.

The 36-year-old striker (pictured) has previously turned out for the likes of Southampton and West Bromwich Albion in the Premier League, and has a single England cap to his name after featuring in a game against Chile in November 2013.

However, he suffered a stress fracture in his ankle during preseason and was excluded from Wrexham's 24-man squad when it was submitted earlier this month.

According to Capology, Rodriguez is currently the North Wales club's third-highest earner, taking home a base salary of £25,000 per week.

Injured players Danny Ward, Andy Cannon, and Ollie Rathbone were also left off the list, but the latter looks likely to take up the final squad place as he is expected to return to fitness in the near future.

The former Rotherham midfielder was an important figure for Wrexham last term, picking up the club's player of the season award.
