Church community left shocked after vicar's resignation
Western Mail
|June 04, 2025
A CHURCH community has been left reeling by the resignation of a vicar amid claims of a “toxic situation”.
All its wardens and church officers have also stepped down over the “recent treatment of one of their number by the diocesan hierarchy”.
Father Dominic Cawdell has sent a letter of resignation as vicar of Holywell and Greenfield, Flintshire, to the Bishop of St Asaph.
He announced his decision during Sunday Eucharist services at St Peter's, Holywell, and Holy Trinity, Greenfield.
A since deleted statement by Holywell & Greenfield Churches suggested ongoing conflicts had made Fr Dominic’s position untenable.
It read: “Father Dominic explained [during the services] that he is resigning this post after seven dreadful months in which he has been attacked from all sides.
“The situation has become toxic for everyone involved and there seems to be no clear end in sight. For the sake of his physical and mental well-being, he has therefore decided to step aside.”
The Diocese of St Asaph said the situation is “challenging and sensitive”, but it is “committed to resolving the issues”.
At the age of 22, a year younger than the usual age for ordination, Fr Dominic became the youngest-ever Church in Wales deacon in June 2018.
