After Slot-ting in perfectly at Anfield, Arne faces litmus test
The Straits Times
|October 20, 2024
No Liverpool manager in 132 years of club history has made as good a start to their reign as Arne Slot. And yet, as his team lead the Premier League after six wins from seven matches, nine from 10 competitive games, there is a calm about Liverpool. Nobody on Merseyside appears to be getting too excited.
Much of that is to do with Slot's downbeat public persona. The 46-year-old Dutchman is business-like, unfussy, even-tempered. So far.
"I am hoping to do more special things than only winning nine out of 10," he said after his team beat Crystal Palace a fortnight ago. There's also the style of play, far more measured than the gegenpressing, heavy-metal thunder of the previous manager.
Yes, here's where Jurgen Klopp comes in. There is a definite hangover from an almost nine-year love affair with Liverpool fans. Anfield doesn't quite rock with the same energy. Not that a quiet Anfield never happened in the Klopp years; the Kop could become becalmed on lazy Saturday afternoons.
