Plans for new incinerator to heat the Royal Stoke

It could be joined to city’s heat network

BURNING rubbish could soon help heat Staffordshire’s main hospital.

Proposals are being drawn up for the Royal Stoke University Hospital to receive both heat and electricity from the forthcoming Energy Recovery Facility at Hanford.

That’s due to replace the existing waste incinerator by the end of the decade.

Bosses at University Hospitals of North Midlands, which runs the Royal Stoke, says it would help protect the Royal Stoke from spiking global energy prices while reducing its carbon emissions. UHNM has been in talks with Stoke-on-Trent City Council and SSE Energy Solutions Ltd on the proposals.
