Big celebration event at thriving shopping centre which was 'second built in country'
ONE of the oldest shopping centres in the country marked its 60th anniversary with a day of celebrations.
Longton Exchange Shopping Centre was the second shopping centre to be built in the UK and has endured difficult periods.
But it is currently a big hit with traders and shoppers alike.
Saturday's event included music, dance, a range of stalls and an appearance from Kelvin the Kiln, the mascot for Stoke-on-Trent's Centenary celebrations.
Chris Ward, manager of Longton Exchange shopping centre, said: "The precinct is the second built in the country, behind Coventry.
"It was constructed in 1965 and it was really at the forefront of shopping. It was a change from the old style of high streets as they were back in the 1960s, independent, corner shops, it brought the shops all into one place.
