Tall ship to return after round-the-world voyage

Dutch Tall Ship Oosterschelde

A SPECTACULAR tall ship is to return to Plymouth this weekend more than two years after it left the city for a round-the-world voyage

The eye-catching Dutch schooner Oosterschelde is due to arrive at the Barbican in time for the Christmas lights switch-on this Saturday.

People will be able to look on board the three mast tall ship, one of the world’s finest, on Sunday from 1pm to 5pm.

Built in 1917 and restored between 1988 and 1992, the Oosterschelde is one of the last remaining historic tall ships in the world.

It is recognised as a vessel of national cultural significance. Its world voyage marked the longest and most ambitious journey in its history.

The largest sailing vessel ever restored in the Netherlands, the ship set off from Plymouth in August 2023 on a conservation mission, recreating Charles Darwin's famous voyage of scientific discovery on HMS Beagle from 1831.

The two-year circumnavigation was part of the Darwin200 Global Voyage to promote global conservation and youth engagement in science.
