Call for police to get tough after fraud surges by 19%
The Guardian
|March 31, 2025
Campaigners are calling for police to crack down on scammers they say are stealing millions of pounds with little fear of penalty.
The pleas follow a government announcement last week that it was working on an expanded and "robust response" to a 19% surge in fraud offences last year.
Jorij Abraham of the Global Anti-Scam Alliance said: "You can scam and go free. There is hardly any risk. It is easy, low cost and quite rewarding. We are calling on politicians around the globe to give law enforcement more resources."
He told the alliance's conference in London last Wednesday that scams were a "penalty-free crime".
