Pregnant teen held in Georgia on drug smuggling charges is freed

A PREGNANT Teesside teenager detained over drug smuggling charges in Georgia has expressed her joy at being freed from prison.
Bella May Culley, who is eight months pregnant, was detained at Tbilisi Airport in May.
It was claimed that the 19-year-old, from Billingham, attempted to bring 12 kilograms (26.4 pounds) of marijuana and two kilograms (4.4 pounds) of hashish into the nation.
The student nurse appeared emotional as she walked free from detention yesterday. When questioned about her feelings, she responded that she was “happy” and told journalists she had not anticipated being released.
Culley’s mother, Lyanne Kennedy, clasped her daughter’s hand as she emerged from custody.
Georgian prosecutors had been weighing up a two-year term, but “decided to consider the time she has already served”, Prosecutor Vakhtang Tsalughelashvili told media agency the Associated Press (AP).
Legal representatives for Culley have been engaged in discussions with judicial officials in Georgia, with further information expected to emerge shortly.
