Prices across Cebu LGUs to be monitored

With an aim to strengthen consumer protection and ensure transparency in market transactions, the Cebu Provincial Government is set to activate a province-wide integrated price monitoring system with technical support from the Department of Trade and Industry in Central Visayas (DTI-7).

The initiative seeks to equip local government units (LGUs) across Cebu with accurate and updated data on the prices of basic necessities and prime commodities to allow consumers to make informed purchasing decisions and help prevent unfair trade practices like overpricing and hoarding.

Assistant provincial administrator Aldwin Empaces said that the system is being designed to consolidate localized pricing data and support the longstanding push from DTI to activate Local Price Monitoring Councils in LGUs in Cebu.

“Dugay na nila (DTI) gusto mahitabo nga ma-activate ang price committee per LGU,” Empaces said.

The province, Empaces said, will play a consolidating role. He explained that, for instance, if a specific town sets a certain price for livestock, that figure would be integrated into the overall price monitoring database for the entire province.
