ICC denies Duterte's bid for interim release
The Freeman
|October 11, 2025
The International Criminal Court has denied former President Rodrigo Duterte's request for interim release, ordering him to remain in detention at The Hague.
-
In a decision released Friday, October 10, the court's Pre-Trial Chamber I ruled that the former president and current Davao City mayor poses too great a risk of fleeing justice, obstructing proceedings and continuing to commit crimes.
The three judges of the chamber pointed to Duterte's repeated rejection of the court's legitimacy-calling his detention a "kidnapping"-and his powerful family connections as evidence he would likely abscond if released.
IS DUTERTE FAKING ILLNESS?
Meanwhile, ICC prosecutors have asked the pretrial chamber to tap three independent specialists to evaluate Duterte's health, including whether he may be feigning illness.
