Hontiveros lauds launch of anti-graft group

With the recent launch of the Cebu Citizen Anti-Corruption Watch, Senator Risa Hontiveros praised the initiative, stressing that citizen watchdogs play a vital role in ensuring accountability, and must be fully supported.

"Absolutely essential na may citizen participation. Mabuhay sa naglunsad ng citizen's watch against corruption dito sa Cebu," said Hontiveros in a press conference yesterday.
She said although citizen participation has long been a proud tradition in the Philippines, she also observed that it tends to fade over time.
She noted that one of the earliest groups she knew of was the Concerned Citizens of Abra for Good Government, which emerged in the Cordilleras in the 1980s.
Hontiveros added that the Senate is, in fact, considering institutionalizing citizen participation in the budget-making process.
