We hear of this term every trade deadline and offseason transactions and teams always give this serious attention.
This refers to a salary cap exception in the NBA’s collective bargaining agreement (CBA) allowing teams to resign their own free agents regardless of going over the salary cap.
To have parity in the league, the salary cap was introduced in 1983. With its complicated rules and exceptions, the cap limits the total amount of money NBA teams pay to their players.
This is where the Bird Rights come in and is named after basketball legend Larry Bird. The Boston Celtics wanted to resign Bird in 1983 despite being over the salary cap. In turn, the league amended its rules allowing Boston to resign him.
