At the recent We Women Want 2025 Conclave and Shakti Awards, one voice stood out—Lt. Gen. Dr. Sadhana Senanayake, the first woman to hold the prestigious post of Director General, Medical Services (Army).
With grace and grit, she captivated the audience as she shared an extraordinary journey marked by courage, service, and pioneering leadership in a traditionally male-dominated world.
Born into a military family during the turbulent days before the 1965 Indo-Pak war, Lt. Gen. Senanayake's childhood was shaped by sacrifice and resilience. "My father, a doctor in the Indian Air Force, inspired not just me, but three generations," she recalled, describing nights spent in trenches during air raids in 1971. The motto of "service before self" was more than a phrase—it was a way of life instilled early on.
