Newcastle in the 1920s
The Chronicle
|November 19, 2025
We step back 100 years to the 1920s - a decade right on the edge of living memory. Although the Allies had emerged victorious from the 1914-18 First World War, the bloody conflict had taken a huge toll on Britain economically, physically and emotionally.

The nation would never again return to the position of international power and prestige it had enjoyed before the war.
Our 10 archive photographs - one for each year of the 1920s - recall scenes captured in a very different Newcastle. But first, what was going on in the wider world during that frequently difficult postwar era?
In the United States, prohibition was introduced in 1920, banning the sale of alcohol and unleashing a sharp rise in organised crime. In 1922, the British archaeologist Howard Carter discovered the tomb of Egyptian pharaoh Tutankhamun and the BBC was formed, laying the foundations of public service broadcasting and modern public media.
The General Strike of 1926 plunged the nation into crisis and as the decade drew to a close, the 1929 Wall Street Crash saw the collapse of the US stock market, triggering the Great Depression and worldwide economic turmoil.
