Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan, currently imprisoned in Adiala Jail since August 2023, may see a turning point in his legal and political fate this week.

As the Islamabad High Court (IHC) prepares to hear bail petitions on June 11 in the Rs 2,202 crore Al-Qadir Trust case, Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party is expressing cautious optimism. But behind the legal proceedings lies a high-stakes political negotiation—one that could involve Pakistan's powerful military establishment, led by Army Chief General Asim Munir.
LEGAL FRONT
PTI's legal team, led by Gohar Ali Khan, has stated that the court could potentially grant bail to both Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi. The couple was convicted in the Al-Qadir Trust case, which accuses them of misusing charitable donations for personal gain. PTI has repeatedly argued that the charges are politically motivated and designed to keep Khan from returning to political life.

The global leadership on sustainable development appears to have proven itself inadequate in controlling the damage that is being caused by the forces of modernisation. Access to development is indeed a human right, and modernity is also a pressing need of the times we live in. Both of these appear to be the only answers to the questions of poverty and misery that we see still engulfing a large part of our population. But one cannot deny that development in its conventional course can only happen at the expense of natural resources. Infrastructure can develop only at the cost of forests, and material well-being can only happen at the cost of natural resources. And therefore, a severe paradox presents itself, demanding our immediate attention, as to where we can find the solution that could bring a resolution to this problem.
